Arrest those responsible for Kupwara taxi driver’s death, says Rasheed

Independent legislator and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chairman Er Rasheed on Monday demanded the arrest of persons responsible for the killers of a civilian driver in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.

Asif Iqbal, a resident of Thandipora village, was killed outside his house on Saturday in what the army termed as ‘cross fire’.

Rasheed asked the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to ensure that those involved in the murder of the youth were put behind the bars to “restore credibility of the government.”

“If Mehbooba means business she must ensure that those involved in cold blooded murder of Asif are put behind the bars to enhance credibility of the government,” he said while addressing a function in his home constituency of Langate, 70 kms from capital Srinagar.

He reminded the chief minister of her claims having no faith on these probes when she was in the opposition. “She was now following footprints of her predecessor Omar Abdullah by ordering these fake probes which will yield nothing but just erode the credibility of the state institutions further.”

“When these probes yielded nothing in the past, how could they yield any result this time,” he asked.

“Let Chief Minister or anybody else show a single instance when the magisterial probe has yielded anything or fixed the responsibility on anyone in hundreds of such incidents and probes since 1989. The Magisterial enquiry has also lost its relevance after Army tried to justify the killing of Asif by claiming that he was caught in the cross fire between militants and forces”.

Claiming that the people have lost faith in these probes, Rashid said: “Nobody raises fingers on the wisdom of the Deputy Commissioners and others who have been conducting these enquires from time to time in a situation when they have been left at the mercy of security forces. How they can dare to even dream of doing justice?”

“The only job deputy commissioners have been left to do is to slap PSAs on innocents and there can be hardly an instance when a deputy commissioner would have dared to reject police’s dossier. Even these magistrates have been forced to slap PSA after PSA on those who have never come out of jails and police lockups since decades,” Rashid said.
