IGP says situation remained ‘normal’
Srinagar: Authorities on Wednesday imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts while a complete shutdown was observed across the Valley to protest against the civilian killings.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown today against the three civilian killings at different places in last one week.
However, the district administration Srinagar had decided to impose restrictions in Srinagar areas as precautionary measure.
The restrictions in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal Police Stations were imposed to thwart any protest, officials said.
They said that areas under Maisuma and Kral Khud Police Stations remained under partial restrictions.
Heavy contingents of forces were deployed in Srinagar areas who had erected concertina wires on the road, which halted the pedestrian as well as the vehicular movement, local sources said.
Meanwhile, the Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was also put under house detention.
All the shops, business establishments and petrol pumps remained closed throughout the day while the vehicular movement was also thin on the roads.
In view of the shutdown call, authorities suspended the train services for “security reasons” in the Kashmir valley today.
“We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley for security reasons following advisory from the police,” officials said.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Munir Ahmad Khan said, adding that the situation remained peaceful throughout the day. “No untoward incident occurred at any place,” he said.
