Jaipur: In a shocking incident in Rajasthan’s Jalore district, a man set his two wives on fire allegedly for not keeping his mother happy, police said today.

The incident allegedly happened yesterday when the accused, Deepa Ram, took his two wives – 25-year-old Daria Devi and 27-year-old Mali Devi – in his car on the pretext of buying them jewellery, the police said.

During questioning, Deepa Ram claimed that he was unhappy with both his wives because of family matters and also because they did not keep his mother happy, Additional Superintendent of Police Jalore Binja Ram said.

“He had a heated argument with them while driving, shortly after which he stopped his car at the side of the road,” Binja Ram said, adding that “one of his wives managed to get out of the vehicle to ask for help from those passing by. But Deepa Ram quickly got out of the car and managed to push her back into the vehicle and drove away.”

“After driving for a while, he took them to a secluded place. He then stepped out of the vehicle, locked both his wives inside and set the car on fire,” Binja Ram said, adding that both his wives were charred to death.

The accused works as a labourer in neighbouring Gujarat and is a father of three children. The police in Jalore district say he has confessed to his crime and has been arrested.
