Did ‘Charming Liberal’ Trudeau’s Canada abstain from voting against Israel? YES!

Canada was one of 35 countries that abstained from voting on a contentious UN resolution denouncing Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The General Assembly voted 128-9 in favour of the resolution.

Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau is the leader of the Liberal Party. A look at Trudeau’s media management leaves bare the PR that is used to project him as a champion of Human Rights and liberal values, not consistent with the country’s, and the Prime Mister’s, stand on Israel.

According to a report by Mike Blanchfield and Alexander Panetta in The Canadian Press that the government’s decision to abstain was the result of a painstaking two-week analysis that tried to balance two competing interests — Canada’s support of the U.S.’s sovereign right to decide on the location of its embassy versus Ottawa’s view that the status of Jerusalem has to be decided as part of a broader peace agreement.

The United States otherwise stood isolated in the UN Security Council as the members, even it’s closest allies Britain and France openly lambasted Donald Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, was the sole voice supporting Trump’s decision on Jerusalem during an emergency meeting held by the 15-membered powerful body of the UN.

“We disagree with the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and to begin preparation to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”

“It is not in line with Security Council resolutions and is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region,” said Permanent Representatives of Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and Sweden in a joint statement.
