In crime infested UP, Yogi govt set to withdraw 20,000 cases lodged against politicians

Chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath on Thursday announced in the House that the state government would soon withdraw nearly 20,000 criminal cases lodged against politicians and political workers across parties.

The move is aimed at reducing the pendency of cases. Yogi said that the police usually registers petty cases against people’s representatives staging dharna or protesting on some issue. “These cases should be closed. The government is working on it and soon nearly 20,000 such cases would be withdrawn,” he said while speaking on UPCOCA.

It is pertinent to note that Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of crimes against women. While the state recorded 14.5% of the total cases of crimes against women, it accounted for 12.4% of the total number of rape cases, second only to Madhya Pradesh, which recorded 12.5% of the total rape cases in 2016. The crime graph is on a rise in Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement comes days after the cabinet cleared a proposal to make necessary amendments in relevant laws to withdraw cases lodged under section 107 and 109 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) under which people are made to submit a bond before an executive magistrate promising proper conduct in line with public order.

Under section 107 CrPC, an executive magistrate orders a person, suspected of disturbing public order and tranquility to submit a bond and a case is registered in case they violate the bond.

Similarly, under section 109, a person is directed to submit bond for person who is suspected to be present at a place to commit a cognizable offence.
