The updated list of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on Sunday at midnight, in compliance with an Indian Supreme Court verdict.

A large number of civilians in Assam, almost exclusively Muslim, labeled as “immigrants” from Bangladesh, fear that this could lead to their deportation.

When asked to comment on the matter, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora said: “Muslims are relatively blacklisted whereas, Hindus are let scot free.”

The Congress in Assam has accused the BJP of drawing up a blueprint to deport minorities in the name of the NRC update.

Several ministers in India are supporting this decision including the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

“The Hindu rate of population growth is declining. But the Muslim rate is rising. Most of the Muslims here are from Bangladesh. If this continues, the Assamese Hindus will become a minority soon; we will lose our language, our culture, our identity,” Himanta Biswa Sarma, finance minister in the Assam government told the Washington Post.

Paramilitary troops have been deployed across Assam, and the Indian army have been asked to prepare themselves for any upcoming disruption that may follow.
