‘No position holders’, BOSE says didn’t announce list following court orders

Srinagar: A day after Jammu and Kashmir Board of Board of School Education (BOSE) declared the class 10 results , the ‘toppers’ got highlighted on social media.

A report from a leading Kashmiri newspaper, Greater Kashmir, done by journalist Rizwan Geelani, was shared on social media with congratulation messages to the toppers.

However Public Relations Officer (PRO) JK-BOSE Showkat Ahmad while speaking to Free Press Kashmir said that the position system has already been ended by the BOSE following the supreme court orders.

“The introduction of the pointer system ensures that there isn’t a rat-race. Following court orders, this year too, we have not made public the list of toppers,” says Showkat Ahmad, PRO JK-BOSE.

When Free Press Kashmir tried to check the records of the students with 490 and 491 marks, no such result could be found on the JK-BOSE official website.

While speaking to Free Press Kashmir, journalist Syed Rizwan Geelani whose report is being circulated said that the news report is two years old, and has somehow found its way back to the social media.

Meanwhile, fake news of toppers by many social media pages, that claim to run news organisations, has upset Humnah Javed, a student who was worried about her ‘position’ being given to someone else.

Humnah Javed, a Kashmir Valley School student reveals that she has scored 495 marks, which technically makes her the second position, if the records were from the current year. She says that she’s upset that a “news pages” with thousands of likes are circulating an old report without fact checking.

“This is so unfortunate that these pages have published the report even without confirming the facts,” Humnah says.

Talking about the obsession with topping the lists, and media credibility, Mehak Khan, who is a practicing advocate, says that the media in Kashmir has lost credibility because of these fake pages, and it ‘gets confirmed from the fact that different news pages on social media have uploaded the names of different students’.

“The result that has been uploaded apparently is two years old and they can be sued for the same,” she says, adding that mushrooming pages on social media which claim to be news organizations indulge in ‘peddling lies’.
