Jammu: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday informed the Lower House of the state Assembly that at least 525 people were detained under the Public Safety Act in 2016 and the number of people held under the law, described as a ‘lawless law’ by Amnesty International, in 2017 were 201.
Mehbooba gave out the figures in a written reply to a question asked by National Conference legislator Mubarak Gul.
The reply also stated that out of the 201 people detained in 2017, 124 were released.
“The rest, 77 are still under preventive detention,” Mehbooba said in the written reply.
Yesterday, the Chief Minister, a written reply revealed that 21,400 hectares of land in the state is under the illegal occupation of the Army and other security establishments.
She also mentioned that 18,846 hectares of land was under ‘authorized occupation’ of the forces.
