JNU students from JK beaten up for demanding #JusticeForAsifa in New Delhi

On the call given by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), on January 22, 2018 Kashmiri students from JNU assembled in front of the Jammu and Kashmir Bhawan for a peaceful protest.

The call was given against the laxity of the Jammu and Kashmir government and the police regarding the alleged rape and murder of Asifa, an eight-year-old girl from Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Their protesters assembled peacefully, holding placards, demanded the suspension of the Senior Superintended of Police and the culprit be brought to justice.

The protesters were met with brute force and lathicharge in front of the Jammu and Kashmir Bhawan.

Heba Ahmed, a JNU student told Free Press Kashmir, “The protesters faced police brutality because of the presence of Kashmiri students in the rally. We have protested so many times against rape in front of many government bhawans but never faced a lathicharge like this. Almost 50 percent of protestors are from Jammu and Kashmir, hence the police brutality. This is what the police of an occupying state does.”

The protestors are detained at Tughlak Road Police Station presently.

Tarif Sohail, a PhD scholar from the Center for Study of Law and Governance, JNU said, “There are 30-40 students from Jammu and Kashmir who are brutally beaten up. Women students were also beaten. Some of the students from Jammu and Kashmir are missing. We don’t know where they are. Some of us are detained right now. We are brutally beaten up because of our state of residence.”

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday had arrested a 15-year-old boy for the murder. Police sources had told NDTV that the teenager had confessed to the crime.
