Panchayat Polls: Mehbooba to chair All Party Meet

Jammu: Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice, Abdul Haq Khan on Thursday informed the House that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti will chair the All Party Meeting to seek the views of all the political parties in the State regarding the conduct of Panchayat elections.

The Minister said the decision in this regard was taken on the suggestions put forth by the leaders of various political parties.

Pertinently, the decision to convene the All Party Meeting on the issue was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister earlier this week.

Earlier, it was decided the Law and Justice Minister Haq Khan would preside over the meeting and the opposition parties had questioned the decision. Congress had said that without the CM, the All Party Meet would yield no results.

Main Opposition party, National Conference, General Secretary, Ali Mohammad Sagar, said that his party is yet to decide whether to participate in all-party meet or not.

“Government is itself confused over holding of Panchayat polls,” Sagar said. “We will sit together and then decide whether to participate in the all-party meet or not,” he added.

However, the BJP, alliance partner of the PDP had said that they are ready for the polls.

BJP State President, Sat Sharma asserted, “We have started campaigning in every district of the state. We will put our point in all-party meet that polls should be held in the state,” Sharma added.

Senior BJP leader Ashok Koul also mentioned that BJP was ready for the polls.

PDP vice-president Sartaj Madni said that his party will put its point of view in all-party meet. “Whatever our stand about Panchayat polls is, we will put in the meeting,” Madni said.
