SMHS Shootout: Superintendent of Central Jail suspended

Srinagar: The Superintendent of the Central Jail, Srinagar has been suspended by the Government after the Lashkar militant Naved Jutt escaped on Wednesday after a brief shootout at the SMHS hospital.

In the shootout, two policemen died.

“Pending enquiry into the incident on 6 February, 2018, at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, leading to the death of the two constables and escape of a militant, Mr Hilal Ahmed Rather , Superintendent, Central Jail, Srinagar is hereby placed under suspension, with immediate effect,” a government order issued by Home Department’s Principal Secretary RK Goyal said.

Earlier in the day, S P Vaid, the Director General of Police had said that the attack and the escape of Naveed Jat from SMHS hospital was ‘not possible without connivance at the Srinagar Central Jail.’

DGP also informed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a Superintendent  is looking into the matter.

“I believe a magisterial probe is also being ordered to ascertain all the facts that led to the attack and the subsequent escape,” Vaid said.
