Bring him back: Documentary on Maqbool Bhat released 34 years after his hanging

A film on Maqbool Bhat the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) was released on the 34th anniversary of his hanging. Bhat was hanged by the Indian Government on February 11, 1984, in Tihar Jail, without informing his family, his body was buried in the jail compound.

Bhat was a prominent leader of Kashmir’s resistance movement, demanding independence from India and Pakistan. Modern Kashmiri liberation movement draws from the ideas of Maqbool Bhat.

The film ‘Bring Him Back’ is directed and produced by Srinagar based Journalist, Fahad Shah & London based activist, Talat Bhat. The film is Co-produced by RåFILM Sweden & JKTV Live Manchester.

The film has scenes of Shahmli Begum, the mother of Maqbool Bhat and her campaign to get her son’s mortal remains back to Kashmir for last 31 years (the time the film was shot).

The film-makers follow Bhat’s mother while she talks about his childhood, struggle and the hardships during his political career.

There are scenes which show her traveling to ‘Sufi shrines to pray for her campaign to bring back her sons mortal remains back to Kashmir, her wish before she dies’.
