Kashmir issue will not disappear by disallowing Friday prayers, Mirwaiz tells Govt

Srinagar: In his Friday sermon, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq lashed out at the the government and said that by disallowing Friday prayers, Kashmir issue will not ‘disappear’.

He castigated the government for repeatedly disallowing Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid and other mosques and imposing curbs in the Downtown area of Srinagar.

The congregational Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid were allowed after three weeks.

“The Muslim collaborators under the influence of their masters need to be reminded that in Islam the mosque is a place of collective worship. It is a community centre for the Muslims where besides other things the community comes together at prayer times and otherwise, to discuss and deliberate the issues they are facing,” he said.

Mirwaiz added, “Jumma Khutba reflects those issues and problems of the community and their redressal in the light of Quran, Sunnah and ethics.”

He pointed out the gravest crisis faced by the people of Kashmir from the past 30 odd years is the severe political and religious repression. He added that as a consequence of that repression, Kashmir issue has remained unresolved.

“Let those who mislead by such propaganda understand that the Kashmir problem will not disappear by barring prayers at mosques and blocking all avenues of public expression of protest and outrage against repression, including in the mosques.,” he said.
