50 dead as Bangladesh passenger plane with 71 on board crash-lands

A US-Bangla airlines aircraft carrying 71 people including four crew members crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon.

Kathmandu Post reported, Tourism Ministry Joint Secretary Suresh Acharya said 25 injured passengers have been rescued and sent to different hospitals for treatment. TIA said there were 37 males, 27 females and two child onboard the aircraft.

Twenty-five people were rescued and taken to Kathmandu Medical College, Teaching Hospital, Norvic Hospital and Medicity Hospital. However, eight of those rescued were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, according to TIA Spokesperson Prem Nath Thakur.

The Himalayan reported, many fire-fighting engines and ambulances rushed to the accident site immediately as news of the crash broke.

According to General Manager at the TIA, Raj Kumar Chhettri, the plane crashed at 2:18 pm. “The control tower had communicated with the pilot of the plane which was supposed to land at Runway 2.”
