Kupwara Gunfight: Five slain militants are understood to be foreigners, says Police

Srinagar: In the ongoing gun fight which is raging in the Chek Fateh Khan forest area of Halmatpora, Kupwara since Tuesday, 5 militants, three army men and two policemen have been killed.

According to the police all the five killed militants are understood to be foreigners who were a part of a ‘freshly infiltrated’ group.

“In the process a huge cache of arms and ammunition and other incriminating materials which include AK 47 rifles, grenades, etc were recovered from the encounter site,” read a statement of the police.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, SP Pani while talking to reporters also said that all the militants are supposedly related to the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit.

“It was a very difficult operation in view of thick vegetation and open area,” he said, while talking to reporters on the sidelines of wreath-laying ceremony of policemen killed in the two-day gunfight.

“On the basis of material recovered from the site of the gunfight, it looks the slain militants were associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit,” he said.

The two policemen killed in the gun fight have been identified as Sgct Deepak Thusoo and SPO Mohd Yousuf. Three army men killed have been identified as Sep Ashraf Rather of 160 TA, NK Ranjeet Kholka of 05 Bihar. The identity of the third army man is yet to be ascertained.

Earlier in the exchange of fire one SPO namely Javaid Ahmad was also injured and subsequently shifted to hospital for treatment .His condition is stable.
