Srinagar: Gowhar Ahmed Rather, a 22-year old youth who was admitted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura in a critical condition on Monday has succumbed to his injuries.
Greater Kashmir while quoting the Medical Superintendent of SKIMS, Dr Farooq Jan, confirmed the death. The police had claimed that Rather got injured during a police chase when he fell into a drain and injured his head.
However the hospital authorities say that the slain youth had suffered a firearm injury in his head. The locals also had claimed that the boy was hit by a bullet.
With Rather’s death, the civilian casualties in the aftermath of the Shopian gunfights have risen to five.
Earlier, Iqbal Bhat, of Khasipora Shopian, Mehraj-ud-din Bhat of Kachdoora village, Mushtaq Ahmad Thoker and Zubair Ahmad Bhat of Shopian district were killed.
On Tuesday, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said that Guterres is ‘very concerned’ over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and has reminded the members states that they are responsible under international humanitarian law to protect civilians.
Miirwaiz Umar Farooq while welcoming the statement said that it’s of ‘little consolation’ for Kashmiris.
