Shopian killings aftermath: Mirwaiz defies house arrest, detained

Srinagar: Chairman of Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday was detained after he tried to defy his house arrest.

The Joint Resistance Leadership has decided to move towards Shopian and express solidarity with the bereaved families whose kin were killed during the Shopian gun fights on Sunday.

Mirwaiz has been lodged in the Nigeen Police station.

An eye witness said that Mirwaiz came out of his Nigeen residence around 11:30 am where he has been placed under house arrest. “He tried to march towards Shopian, but a large posse of policemen deployed there foiled his march by detaining him,” he said.

Meanwhile, normal life continued to remain affected for the fourth consecutive day. As train services remained suspended for the foruth consecutive day, the authorities closed all educational institutions and postponed exams scheduled for Wednesday amid tensions in the Valley.
