Tral observes spontaneous shutdown, thousands attend funeral of slain militants

Amid a spontaneous shutdown in Tral, thousands of people turned up at the funeral of two local militants who were killed with two foreign militants in a gun fight in the Lam forests of the district.

Two local militants  identified as Abid Ahmad of Khargund and Ishfaq Ahmad of Handoora  were killed along with two foreigners, identified by the police as Umar Khalid and Yasir, in a 12-hour-long gunfight in Lam forests of Tral yesterday.

An army man and a cop were also killed and two army men wounded in the gunfight.

Eye witnesses said that thousands of people had assembled in both the villages to take part in the last rites of the slain militants.

Meanwhile, a spontaneous shutdown is being observed in Tral area to mourn the killings.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Awantipora, Muhammad Zahid had told news agency KNS that four Jaish militants include top commander, Omar Khalid who had replaced Mufti Waqas, was killed in the gun fight.

Mufti Waqas, was killed in March in a joint operation of the Army, the Jammu and Kashmir police and the CRPF in the Awantipora area of South Kashmir. According to the Army, Waqas had plotted the attack on the Sunjuwan camp in Jammu on February 11 in which six armed forces personnel were killed.
