Shopian bloodbath: With the death of fifth civilian and as many militants, toll rises to 10

With the killing of two more civilians in clashes erupted after the Shopian gun fight, the civilian death toll has risen to five.  The slain were identified as Zubair Ahmad Negroo of Ayangund Rajpora and Yasir of Shopian.

Earlier, Adil Ahmed, a resident of Ashmuji of Kulgam district was declared dead on arrival at the District hospital of Kulgam. Another youth identified as Sajad Ahmad Rather who had sustained a bullet injury in the head and was declared brought dead at the District Hospital of Shopian.

A 17-year old boy, identified as Asif Ahmad Mir was critically injured during clashes, succumbed to his injuries at the SMHS Hospital in Srinagar.

Five militants including top Hizb commander Sadam Padder and Kashmir University assistant professor Dr Mohammad Rafi Bhat were killed in a gun fight that broke out early Sunday morning in Badigam village after the joint team of Army, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the area.

Over a dozen protesters have been injured during clashes near the encounter site.

Reacting over the killing of the professor, former chief minister Omar Abdullah said that his death is the answer to those  who say that jobs is the solution to violence and alienation in Kashmir.
