US welcomes implementation of 2003 Ceasefire Pact between India and Pakistan

The decision to implement bilateral ceasefire signed in 2003 by India and Pakistan has been welcomed by the United States.

“The US welcomes reports that the militaries of India and Pakistan have reaffirmed their commitment to fully implement the 2003 ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC),” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement on Thursday.

“The normalisation of relations between Pakistan and India is vital to both countries and the region,” she added.

On Tuesday, the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries agreed to implement the ceasefire pact in an effort to ensure peace on both the international border and the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Wednesday, China also hailed both the countries for implementing the 2003 ceasefire pact.

China on Tuesday avoided making any direct comment over Pakistan’s latest Gilgit-Baltistan order, but added that CPEC, which goes through the region, will not affect their stand on Kashmir issue that it should be resolved between India and Pakistan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing that “Kashmir issue is a historical baggage between India and Pakistan and therefore shall be resolved between the two sides through dialogue and consultation”.
