Kashmir newspaper editorials go blank in protest against Shujaat Bukhari’s assassination

In protest against the assassination of noted and veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari, on June 14, prominent newspapers in Kashmir left their editorials blank in the Tuesday issue. The protest was carried out by both English and Urdu dailies.

These dailies included Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Observer, Rising Kashmir, Kashmir Reader, Kashmir Observer, Daily Roshini, Buland Kashmir, Sangarmal amid others, creating confusion in the minds of readers.

The decision was taken by the Kashmir Editors’ Guild on Monday, in condemnation of the killing.

“I have been reading Greater Kashmir for 15 years, and Rising Kashmir ever since it launched in 2008. I was surprised when I saw editorials missing in both papers,” said a retired senior state bureaucrat, Malik Mohammad Yousuf.

Bukhari was murdered on June 14 while leaving from his office along with 2 of his security personnel a few minutes before Iftar, a day before the auspicious occasion of Eid-Ul-Fitr.

The valley observed his funeral prayer on Monday in Kreeri town, in Baramulla, along with protests from journalists on his killing in Press Enclave, Srinagar.
