President approves Governor’s Rule in Kashmir after the collapse of PDP-BJP coalition

Following the collapse of the BJP-PDP alliance of the Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind approved Governor’s Rule in Kashmir with immediate affect, news agency ANI reported. The decision followed Mehbooba Mufti’s resignation as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The current Governor of the country, N.N Vohra will be taking the reins from the collapsed government. During his time, Governor’s rule was imposed thrice in the valley. The government has also called for a meeting reviewing the security status of Kashmir following the collapse of the coalition and the Ramzan ceasefire agreement. S P Vaid, the state’s topmost police officer informed NDTV that the operations would continue as scheduled and there would be an increase in intensity.

Following the collapse, the governor explored further options by speaking to BJP’S Kavinder Gupta and former Chief Minister of the state, Mehbooba Mufti for alternative alliances but did not receive a positive response. The president of J & K Congress, GA Mir, was also approached along with National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, who claimed that they did not possess the numerical strength and that elections were the only option left.

The conclusion of these meetings led to Vohra writing to the President recommending the imposition of Governor’s rule in the state.

“J&K Governor has forwarded his report to the President of India for imposition of Governor’s Rule under Section 92 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir,” a spokesperson from Raj Bhawan stated.
