Srinagar: Departing from the current norm of appointing people with military, police or civil service backgrounds to the Governor’s post, insiders said that the Government of India would prefer a ‘political person’ over Vohra, Hindustan Times reported.

This comes after the current JK Governor, N.N Vohra’s term is expected to end on June 27, but will continue until the end of Amarnath Yatra, which starts from June 28 to August 26.

“We are looking for a political person. We moved from military men to an administrator as J&K governor. We have to take it forward by appointing a political person as the next governor. We cannot turn the clock back by having another military man as the next governor,” a person familiar with the issue said. “The search is on.”

N.N Vohra, 82, is currently in his second term as the state’s governor, with governor’s rule being imposed 4 times during his tenure. JK was placed under governor’s rule after the collapse of the PDP-BJP alliance on Monday. Soon after, Mehbooba Mufti placed her resignation as Chief Minister.
