Two BSF personnel among three arrested for failed theft of weaponry

Srinagar: On Thursday, two BSF personnel including an officer were among the three persons arrested after the police successfully foiled an attempt to snatch away the rifle of a Personal Security Officer of Gujjar and Bakerwal leader at Khanbabal Housing Colony in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, GNS reported.

Official sources cited to the news agency that Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Sangam had entered the room of PSO Bashir Ahmad (SPO) and took the rifle from the trunk in a wrapped blanket while the latter was in the washroom. When Bhat had entered the room, he had found the trunk busted and has rushed outside. He had then found a frequent visitor of the house, Manzoor in suspicious condition. He had tried to run away but was caught by the SPO and other police personnel.

“Soon after the arrest, Manzoor told police that the rifle was meant for BSF personnel who were waiting for him in a vehicle outside the Housing Colony. Acting swiftly, police arrested the BSF personnel,” sources said.

The arrested were identified as Inspector Patel and Zahoor Ahmad from Tanghdar Kupwara. Manzoor also told the police that he had been promised job and Rs 1.5 lakh in lieu of the rifle by the BSF personnel.

Gujjar and Bakerwal Leader Chaudhary Hamid has called for an investigation into the matter and a thorough inquiry into it.

“I was not present in the home when the incident took place. On returning back, I came to know about the incident. Manzoor is a thief and police should thoroughly investigate the motive as to why they wanted to snatch the rifle and why my PSO was targeted,” he stated.

An FIR 115 under RPC section of 380 (Theft in dwelling house, etc) has been filed, a police officer reported.

Public Relation Officer of BSF said that he would look into the matter.
