Two Amarnath yatris detained after friend found dead in Ramban

Two yatris were detained while carrying their friend’s body who had died earlier in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir after making a pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine on a motorcycle to his Tarn Taran residence in Punjab without informing the authorities, a police official stated to PTI.

The victim, identified as 20-year-old pilgrim, Balkar Singh has been sent for post-mortem while his two friends have been detained for questioning, said Senior Superintendent of Police, Ramban, Mohan Lal.

The deceased’s family has been informed about the incident and they are on their way.

The official added that a motionless person in between a biker and a pillion rider at Nashri on Jammu-Srinagar national highway last evening raised the suspicion of police officials who stopped the motorcyclist for questioning.

“The person in the middle was found dead and immediately the body was shifted to district hospital Ramban. The motorcyclist and the other person were detained for questioning,” said the SSP.

After being questioned, the yatris revealed that that the group was from Tarn Taran village and were going to leave for Jammu post the pilgrimage. On the way, Balkar Singh had complained of uneasiness while they were leaving for Jammu.

Singh was then given some medicines. On the way, they said they had felt he had died but decided to continue the journey.

“Prima facie, the death was caused by heart attack… investigation to ascertain the exact cause of his death is underway,” the SSP said.
