Kashmiri actor-rapper to feature as a journalist in upcoming film Torbaaz besides Sanjay Dutt

Srinagar: A Kashmiri actor-rapper Muazzam Bhat will be acting as a journalist in Sanjay Dutt’s upcoming flick Torbaaz.

“My name is Ubaid in the film and have played the journalist,” Bhat told Free Press Kashmir.

“I am an Afghani who is sent to UK by his family to study journalism just to stay away and safe from the war in Afghanistan. But I again go back to the place to cover the war there,” Bhat said.

Hailing from Srinagar, Bhat said that he had beautiful memories with Sanjay Dutt during the film shoot in Kyrgyzstan. “In the film I keep following his every moment, go where he goes, whom he meets and other activities. Later, we meet in the film and had some scenes jointly,” said Bhat, a pass-out of Journalism department from University of Kashmir.

The film also features the work of Kashmiri musician, singer and songwriter Mohammad Muneem. Two songs Mazhab and Gulati from his latest album are being featured in the film. “It is a great experience to be in the film,” said Muneem who has also co-written the dialogues of the film with director Girish Malik and Bharti, adding that three Kashmiris play a part in the film including the character Baaz which is played by a Kashmiri child artist, Ehsan Javid.

Talking about his experience of shooting with the actor, he said, “It was really overwhelming. Being a Kashmiri, to work with such a huge actor and getting a lead role in the film means a lot to me. The way he talks and behaves with his co-stars on the sets was outstanding. He is a really nice human and a down to earth person,” he added.

Bhat said that Khawar Jamsheed (KJ) Productions, a local production unit in the valley was the first signed him for the film.

“They took the auditions some months back for this role in Srinagar and scores of local actors had come there. Luckily, they found my acting and looks good for the role and signed me,” he said adding “before going in front of the camera on the sets, I was asked to do a number of rehearsals just to check my facial expressions, body moment and dialogue delivery.”

Bhat is also a well know rapper of Kashmir and has mostly sang on the Kashmir conflict. His famous songs include The Time Has Come, Borrowed Time, Panas Panas, Charis Cheth and others.

He has also featured in an advertisement for Jack and Jones, an online shopping store. He has also worked in actor-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s untitled film that was shot in the valley this year.

Bhat has also sang a song in a 16-minute documentary- ‘In the Shade of Fallen Chinar’ shot in Naseem Bagh, University of Kashmir.

The story of the film reportedly revolves around child suicide bombers in Afghanistan and the role of Dutt as a doctor from India who helps rehabilitating kids in war-torn region by engaging them in the game of cricket.

The film has been directed by Girish Malik and is slated for release in 2018, but the dates cannot be confirmed as of now.
