Srinagar: District Bar Association Anantnag conducted a protest march from the district court premises up to Lal Chowk in the district to voice support for Article 35-A. The protest march was led by president Bar Association Anantnag Fayaz Sadogar along with general secretary Sheikh Irfan Gulzar.

The protesters included lawyers who said that any move to fiddle with Article 35- A would be met with resistance and have dire consequences.

“We also appeal to all regions of the state to come and join hands against sinister designs against the scrapping of the special status enjoyed by our state,” bar president Fayaz Sadogar said.

Earlier, The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik met to ‘deliberate the serious challenge’ posed to Article 35A.

“We want to make it clear to Government of India that any and every attempt made at changing the demographic nature of the state will be stiffly resisted,” the JRL said.

Implying that they were in touch with all segments including the legal fraternity, traders, civil society and academia, the JRL said that there is complete unanimity and cohesion among all with regard to ‘resisting and fighting this serious assault together’.

“On 5 and 6 August, a complete protest strike will be observed throughout, people will register their total disapproval & resistance to this politically motivated move. A mass agitation of hitting and occupying streets will be launched if any tinkering with 35A is allowed to take place under a legal garb, the consequences of which will be entirely on those perpetuating such mischievous ploys against people of J&K.”

The JRL also said that people should to be ready as ‘there is every apprehension of a mass crackdown against the leadership and political activists.

“We may be gagged, arrested and jailed. In that case JRL appeals to the people to be strong and carry forward the agitation against this assault,” they said.
