Protests were held in Mandi tehsil of Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday against the onslaughts on Article 35-A.

Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution empowers the Jammu and Kashmir state’s legislature to define “permanent residents” of the state and provide special rights and privileges to those permanent residents.

According to a report in Greater Kashmir, thousands of people took out separate protest marches from mosques soon after congregational weekly prayers. The prayer leaders of the mosques also participated in the protest march.

The protesters while warning against annulment of the Article 35 A raised pro-freedom and pro-Kashmir slogans.

The protesters said that the region will observe shutdown along with other parts of the JK on August 6 when the Supreme Court hears petitions seeking abrogation of the article.

On Friday, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had carried out a protest after Friday prayers in Bilal Masjid at the Bund in Srinagar against the ‘planned abrogation’ of Article 35A. The protest was led by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Muhammad Yasin Malik.

Malik said the people were ready to defend the article ‘with their blood’.

Earlier, The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik met to ‘deliberate the serious challenge posed to Article 35-A.
