Sopore gunfight ends: Two militants killed, army man, cop injured

In a gunfight between militants and armed forces, two militants were killed and an army man and a policeman was injured in Drusoo village of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

An official confirmed that two bodies of the militants were recovered from the site of the gunfight.

A soldier and the cop sustained injures in the fresh exchange of fire, GNS news agency quoted SSP Sopore Javaid Iqbal as having said.

He said that both the injured have been evacuated and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Earlier, Javaid said a cordon-and-search operation was launched at Drusoo village following specific information about the presence of two militants inside a residential house.

As the searches were underway, the hiding militants opened fire upon the forces triggering off a gunfight, he said.

The gunfight continued intermittently till wee hours today, he said.

Sources said one of slain militants is believed to be a resident of Naseerabad of Sopore.

Earlier, two militants were reportedly killed in a gunfight with armed forces in Drusoo village of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday. Reports stated that Jammu and Kashmir Polic Special Operations Group (SOG) and the army carried out searches in the village following inputs about supposed militant presence.

Two militants hiding in the area opened fire on the forces which escalated to a gunfight. Both the militants trapped by the forces have been reportedly killed. Search operation is going on in the area and the identities of the slain militants remain unknown, said the police.

An official said that so far one body has been recovered from the site of the gunfight. “Searches are going on to locate the other body,” he said.

Authorities have suspended internet services in the district as a ‘precautionary measure’. Educational institutions have also been closed for the day.
