In a gunfight along the Line of Control in Gurez, four Army men, including a Major were killed on Tuesday.
Two militants have also been killed in the gunfight, the army said.
A defence spokesman confirmed the deaths of an army Major and three army men in the gunfight which he said broke out after army foiled an infiltration bid in Gurez.
Earlier, senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bandipora, Zulfikar Ahmad said the firing started at around 1 am.
“Ceasefire violation in Gurez,” said the deputy commissioner Bandipora Shahid Iqbal Choudhary on Twitter.
The slain army men have been identified as Major KP Rane, Havaldar Jamie Singh, Havaldar Vikramjeet and rifleman Mandeep of 36 RR.
The spokesman said that two militants were killed in the ongoing operation.
