Triple Talaq bill to be introduced in Rajya Sabha today

The government of India will introduce the triple talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha, after having added a bail provision to the legislation. The bill, if passed, will make it a criminal offence.

Government sources told NDTV that it would bring in an ordinance, or emergency executive order to enact the law, officially called Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, if the opposition did not yield.

The cabinet signed two changes, one which allows only a woman, or a close relative, to file a police case against her husband for instant triple talaq. The second amendment allows her to drop the case if both her and the husband come to a compromise.

A third amendment provides that the magistrate can decide on releasing the husband on bail only after hearing the wife. The bill was cleared last year in the Lok Sabha but is currently in wait to be passed in the Rajya Sabha.
