Major Leetul Gogoi to face disciplinary action, orders CoI

The Army’s Court of Inquiry (CoI) has indicted Major Leetul Gogoi, who was seen with a local Kashmiri woman in a Srinagar hotel on May 23 and ordered disciplinary action against the Major. Sources said the court has held him accountable for fraternizing with a local woman despite instructions to the contrary.

Earlier, a petition filed by International Forum for Justice Human Rights JK Chairman Muhammad Ahsan Untoo prayed that directions be given to non-applicants to furnish a report with respect the case.

The petitioner has said that the action of the Army Major has offended the sentiments of the common people in Kashmir.

A court of inquiry was ordered by the Army against Major Leetul Gogoi who was detained by the police along with a local girl at a Srinagar hotel.

“Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry against Major Gogoi of 53 Rashtriya Rifles regarding an incident that occurred on May 23. If found guilty, appropriate action would be taken against him,” Defence Ministry spokesman, Col Rajesh Kalia told IANS.

Sources also told IANS that Gogoi’s commanding officer was shifted out for alleged lack of command and control over his subordinates. They also said that Gogoi has been taken off from field duties and attached to headquarters till the completion of the inquiry.

On May 30, 2018, the Jammu and Kashmir Police filed a status report before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Srinagar regarding the case of sexual favours that Major Gogoi of 53 Rashtriya Rifles sought from a local Kashmiri woman, on May 23, 2018. The police claimed that it was a case of ‘consenting adults’ as the woman was 19 years old and that neither she nor the Hotel staff, which had prevented their stay, had filed a complaint.

People’s Union For Democratic Rights (PUDR), a rights’ organization based in New Delhi, against this official inaction, has drawn attention to the facts of the case which suggest it to be one of abuse of power by an army man in a “disturbed area”.
