Hurriyat hails UN statement that report on HR abuses in Kashmir not followed up with meaningful improvements

The Hurriyat (M) and Hurriyat (G) have welcomed the statement of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet where she said that the recent UN report on human rights violations in Kashmir has not been followed up with meaningful improvements.

Bachelet made the remarks in her opening statement of the 39th session of the Human Rights Council.

An APHC spokesman said that Kashmir is the world’s most militarised zone with highest concentration of forces who have committed countless human rights violations over the past three decades and continue to do so .

“Civilians continue to get killed, maimed disappeared and arrested at their will,” he said in a statement.

Hurriyat said that as UN is the world’s oldest and greatest international forum, Kashmir is also one of the oldest disputes pending before this forum and UN is duty bound to ensure the resolution of this dispute.

Hurriyat said that the statement of head of the UN human rights council reflects that GoI is not only deeply involved in rights violations in Kashmir but also in muzzling the voice of people peacefully protesting the grave injustices, stands as an eye opener for the world community.

Meanwhile Hurriyat (G) in their statement said that Syed Ali Geelani while expressing hope that the newly appointed High Commissioner for UN Human Rights Commission shall endeavour to fulfill the obligations of this august world body with respect to protection of civil and political rights of the people all over the world including Jammu and Kashmir.

The Hurriyat leader termed Kashmir issue as humanitarian and an issue of right to self-determination as established by the Indian Independence Act of 1947 and guaranteed by the United Nations in a resolution passed and accepted by the UN on the request of the then Indian leadership. In the wake of an illogical denial of right to self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, India deals with the civilian people as well as the pro-resistance political class with military might and its iron fists to suppress the political will and civil rights of the people here. The very existence of this kind of ruthless state-craft has resulted in gross violations of human rights in the every nook and corner of Jammu and Kashmir. People are left at the mercy of occupation military regime, policemen in uniform and their mercenaries without uniforms, roaming freely in the public with lethal weapons.

Bachelet in her opening statement had said, “In Kashmir, our recent report on the human rights situation has not been followed up with meaningful improvements, or even open and serious discussions on how the grave issues raised could be addressed. The people of Kashmir have exactly the same rights to justice and dignity as people all over the world, and we urge the authorities to respect them. The Office continues to request permission to visit both sides of the Line of Control, and in the meantime, will continue its monitoring and reporting.”
