Dozens of Shia Muslim mourners were detained by the police to prevent them from taking out Muharram procession in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar.
Restrictions have been placed in parts of the city falling under the jurisdiction of Shaheed Gunj, Batamaloo, Sherghari, Kothibagh, Ram Munshi Bagh, Maisuma, and Kral Khud police stations to stop processions.
Reports said that dozens of mourners tried to take out procession from Batamaloo area of the city but a large posse of police intercepted them near Fire and Emergency Service Headquarters at Batamaloo and bundled them in police vans.
Chairman Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while condemning the restrictions across Srinagar to prevent Muharram processions said that the city has been held hostage by the rulers.
