Trump’s speech at UN General Assembly draws headshakes, mocking laughter from audience

U.S President Donald Trump at U.N headquarters after delivering a speech on Tuesday.

While boasting of his country’s hard power, U.S President Donald Trump’s remarks drew reactions of headshakes and mocking laughter from other world leaders in the annual UN General Assembly, AP reported.

First arriving late, leading to a a last-minute switch in schedule, he sharply rebuked global governing in the UN and spoke about his ‘America First’ policy.

“We reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism,” Trump said as quoted by AP.

“The US will not tell you how to live and work or worship,” Trump said as quoted by AP. “We only ask that you honor our sovereignty in return.”

Stating that the US military is “more powerful than it has ever been before”, and pointed out that in “less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country”, Trump looked flustered after a few leaders laughed out-rightly and admitted that it was not the reaction he expected “but that’s all right”.

The moment has been seen as underlining and reinforcing his isolation on the international stage, since his aggressive policies and constant withdrawals from international deals have created rifts and doubt.

Tensions are abound further after Trump’s US Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual misconduct by two women.

The mocking laughter has been seen as ironic after in 2014, Trump had tweeted “We need a President who isn’t a laughing stock to the entire World. We need a truly great leader, a genius at strategy and winning. Respect!” in apparent reference to Barack Obama.
