Fire breaks out in Kolkata Medical college, 250 patients evacuated

A fire broke out in Kolkata Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday morning. Upto ten firefighters were engaged in stopping the fire from spreading further. Indian Express reported no casualties and at least 250 people have been evacuated and are being moved to different blocks.

According to officials on the ground, the fire is now under control and is expected to be doused soon. Moreover, to stop further extensive damage, the authorities are shifting oxygen cylinders from the hospital.

Preliminary reports state that the fire broke out at the Department of Pharmacy early this morning. A number of patients, to save themselves, reportedly jumped out of the window and smoke started engulfing the building.

Local media footage aired few patients being taken out of the building with their saline drips while a few lying on the floor while help was arranged. The police also arrived on the spot.

The medical college also known as the Calcutta Medical College is one of the oldest hospitals in the city. Established in 1948, the college is located next to Calcutta University and Presidency College.
