Six civilians killed in aftermath of gunfight in Kulgam where three militants were killed

Srinagar: Six civilians were killed in the aftermath of a gunfight in which three militants were gunned down by armed forces in the Kulgam region of Kashmir.

Four of the injured brought to SKIMS Soura from Kulgam was declared dead on arrival. Earlier, two injured civilians who were brought to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital from Kulgam died at the facility.

Ten injured civilians were brought to district hospital Kulgam. “Three were declared dead on arrival at the facility. Five were referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment,” local daily Greater Kashmir reported.

At least 40 others have been reportedly injured, in blast near the site of the encounter, and in armed forces’ action against the civilian protesters.

Twelve injured were taken to Anantnag district hospital for treatment, out of whom three had bullet injuries.

Eye witnesses said that three civilians were killed in a blast after gunfight ended in Larnoo village. Two more civilians are believed to have died during subsequent clashes with the forces.

The slain civilians were identified as Ubaid Laway son of Mohammad Maqbool Laway, Uzair Ahmad, Mansoor Ahmad, Talib Maqbool of Laroo, Tajamul Ahmad of Denew Bogund and Irshad Ahmad of Shurat.

Three militants were also killed in the five-hour-long gunfight that broke out today morning.

All of them, according to an official, were locals and affiliated with Jaish-e-Muhammad. He identified them as Shahid ul Islam Tantray of Wangam Shopian, Yazil Makroo of Arwani Bijbehara and Zubair Lone of Ahwatoo Kulgam.

Meanwhile, Joint Resistance Leadership has called for shutdown tomorrow against the killings.
