Stone-pelting has assumed ‘alternative terror mechanism’ status in Kashmir, says Kashmiri Pandit rights organisation

Srinagar: Panun Kashmir, an organisation advocating for the rights of displaced Kashmiri Pandits Tuesday told reporters that stone pelting has assumed the status of an “alternative terror mechanism” in the Valley, PTI reported.

Panun Kashmir chief Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo alleged supporters of this mechanism can be found in every political party in the region.

Citing the recent death of an Army personnel due to having been pelted on by stones, he said:  “Stone pelting has formally assumed the status of an alternative terror mechanism and its advocates have, unfortunately, made their way into every political party (in Valley).”

The Panun Kashmir president also endorsed Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat’s statement that stone pelters in Jammu and Kashmir were “overground workers of terror groups and should be dealt with sternly”.

He appealed the government of India and the region’s Governor to think afresh about the menace of stone pelting and review the policy regarding the same.

On Saturday, Rawat had said that there were some people who ask for stone-pelters not to be treated as over ground workers of terrorists.

“The jawan who lost his life after being attacked by stone pelters was guarding a border roads team which was constructing roads, and then we have some people saying don’t treat stone pelters like OGWs(over ground workers) of terrorists,” he said.
