Collins Dictionary chooses ‘single-use’ as the word of the year

Collins Dictionary has termed the word, ‘single-use’ as the word of the year 2018, AP reported. The adjective’s use increase four-fold since 2013 after significant attention paid to pollution in policies. The term refers to disposable plastic products.

Other notable entries into the dictionary are  “backstop”- a legal guarantee about the Irish border after Brexit, and “gammon,” a derogatory British term for an angry pink-faced person sometimes used against supporters of leaving the European Union.

The list was released on Wednesday and also includes the word ‘MeToo‘, referring to the popular social media campaign against sexual harassment that is currently trending in India.

The dictionary says the campaign against sexual harassment and abuse has become part of the language in phrases such as “the MeToo era” and “MeToo moment.”
