US Midterm Election Results: Democrats take over House of Representatives, Republicans set to retain Senate

The highly anticipated US midterm election results saw the Democrats taking control over the House of Representatives while President Donald Trump’s Republican party set to retain hold on the Senate. The Democrats control over the lower chamber of the Congress means that they have the power to block government reforms.

Currently, the midterm elections results have seen a split Congress, which gives Democrats power in terms of legislation, but not in terms of the President’s impeachment as this requires the support from two-thirds of the Senate.

News network CNN has announced that the Republicans will continue to control the US Senate (Upper House). The majority or halfway mark needed for the Republicans is 50 as Vice President Pence has the tiebreak vote. For the Democrats, they would need to secure 51 seats in the House which seems unlikely. Final results are awaited.

In emerging majority over the Senate, Donald Trumo took to Twitter to express his gratitude.

According to a survey by AP VoteCast, nearly 40% of the electorate voted against the President, while 25% said they voted in support of him. 6 in 10 voters reportedly said the country was moving towards the wrong direction, while the same number expressed satisfaction with the economy.

At least 25% said healthcare and immigration were the most important issues in this election.

Meanwhile, the first two Muslim women have been elected to Congress. Rashida Tlaib, born to Palestinian immigrant parents, won Michigan’s 13th congressional district whereas Ilhan Omar, originally from Somalia, has won from Minnesota’s 5th congressional district.

Omar replaces the first Muslim congressman Keith Ellison.
