Shopian gunfight: Four militants, para commando killed; violent clashes erupt near site

Srinagar: Four militants and a para commando were killed while two army men were injured in a gunfight in Nadigam village of Shopian district in South Kashmir on Tuesday.

Reports said a joint team of army’s 34RR, 23 PARA and SOG Shopian cordoned off Nadigam around 2 AM folowing inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

As the joint forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired a volley of bullets, to which the forces retaliated, triggering a gunfight in which three army men were wounded, reports stated.

The injured were identified as  Sepoy Shailender Singh of 34 RR, Lance Naik Somveer of 23 PARA and Havaldar Bhupinder Singh of 23 PARA.

One of the critically wounded were shifted to a 92 Base hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed to his injuries.

An official said that four militants were killed in the gunfight. Their bodies have been recovered, he said, adding they were establishing their identities.

Following the gunfight, internet services were suspended in the district ‘as a precautionary measure’.

Meanwhile, after news of the gunfight spread in the area, violent clashes erupted near the gunfight site, according to reports. Locals took to the streets and pelted stones at the armed forces who retaliated with teargas shells and pellets.
