Srinagar: The valley observed shutdown on Thursday against the killing of a Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader Mir Hafizullah.
All shops and other business establishments remained closed while public transport stayed mainly off the roads in summer capital Srinagar and other district headquarters of the valley.
Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik have called for a shutdown today and protests after congregational prayers tomorrow against the killing.
Mir was shot dead by unknown gunmen at his home in Achabal area of southern Anantnag district on Tuesday. His wife had also sustained an injury in the attack.
United Jihad Council chairman and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin condemned the killing and called it ‘the handiwork of Indian agencies’.
In a statement, he expressed anguish over the killing and said the “machinations of Indian agencies and their supporters in Kashmir have been exposed with this killing.”
Senior CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, in a statement, had said that such killings were unacceptable.
The killing of unarmed civilian is unfortunate and must be condemned by everybody in one voice, the statement had read.
“Whether a civilian is killed by the bullet from one side or the other, it is loss of precious human life,” the statement had said.
