Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest on Monday morning to prevent his participation in a candlelight vigil against human rights violations in Kashmir, a spokesman stated.

He said that Mirwaiz was detained today morning at his residence in Nigeen area of Srinagar.

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik urged people to observe human rights week from today.

The leaders have asked people to lit candles and torchlights after evening prayers during this week to highlight ‘grave’ human rights violations in the valley.

“We appeal to the people of Kashmir to lit candles and torchlights outside mosques in their localities, towns and villages to highlight grave human rights violations at the international level and turn the attention of world community towards them,” said the JRL, in the statement.

Moreover, condemning the arrests and search operations, JRL also urged the members of the civil society, Bar association, traders, employees and transporters to hold protests during the week to highlight the violations.
