Over 230 militants killed in JK in 2018, decrease in injuries caused by stone pelting, say officials: Report

Srinagar: Over 230 militants have been killed in operations by armed forces in Jammu and Kashmir this year so far, while there has been a decrease in injuries caused due to stone pelting, officials said Saturday, as per a PTI report.

“As many as 51 militants were killed in the 80-day period from June 25 to September 14, while 85 militants were killed between September 15 and December 5,” an official said, quoted in the report.

“A total of 232 militants have been killed so far this year, while 240 militants, including foreigners, are active in the Kashmir Valley,” the official said.

“Eight people, including security personnel, were killed and 216 others, including security personnel, received injuries between June 25 and September 14 this year. In the subsequent 80 days — from September 15 to December 5 — just two people were killed and 170 others received injuries during stone pelting incidents,” the official said.

“There has been a marked improvement in the security scenario in the Kashmir Valley ever since the imposition of Governor’s rule on June 19 when the BJP withdrew support to the Mehbooba Mufti-led government,” another official said, quoted in the report.

Earlier, Hindustan Times reported that 227 militants have been killed this year, which included 9 top commanders. November has been the bloodiest month for militants with 37 killings, according to the report.

Recently, The Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) said that in 2018, till November, at least 520 people have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir which include 144 civilians.

According to the break up provided by the JKCCS, from January 2018 to November 2018, 144 civilians, 234 militants and 142 Armed forces were killed in the state.

In their Annual report of 2017, JKCCS had said that as many as 450 persons were killed in the year 2017. Out of the 450, 124 were armed forces, 217 militants, 108 civilians and 1 Ikhwani (renegade).
