Nobody should try to make India ‘another Islamic country’, says Meghalaya’s High Court judge

Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen of the Meghalaya High Court has said that ‘nobody should try to make India another Islamic country, otherwise it will be doomsday for India and the world’, reported the Indian Express.

He also said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process in Assam is “defective as many foreigners become Indians and original Indians are left out which is very sad”.

In the north-eastern state of Assam, India has published a list which strips four million people of their citizenship. It says the process is to root out hordes of illegal Bangladeshi migrants.

The list, named as the National Register of Citizens (NRC), is a list of people who can prove they came to the state by 24 March 1971, when Bangladesh was created.

The list has sparked fears of targeted hunting towards ethnic minorities in Assam. However, officials had said that no one will face immediate deportation and that the option of an appeal will be available to all.

Sen pointed out that the Government of India should bring a law to allow non-Muslim and tribal communities like Khasis from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to live in India without any cut-off year and be given citizenship without any question or production of document.

He further mentioned that he is ‘confident that only this Government under Shri Narendra Modiji will understand the gravity, and will do the needful” and “Chief Minister Mamataji will support the national interest in all respect’.

Disposing a petition Monday — it was filed by one Amon Rana regarding grant of a domicile certificate — Justice Sen dwelt on the topic of citizenship, observing that he will “fail” in his duty if he does not “project the original India and its partition” while hearing a domicile certificate matter.

He said Pakistan declared itself an Islamic country and India should have also been declared a Hindu country but “remained a secular country”. He quoted a book, My People Uprooted: The Exodus of Hindus from East Pakistan and Bangladesh, authored by Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy.
