Indian Army Chief tells forces not to ‘be-friend women with film star names on FB, could be a honey trap’

General Bipin Rawat, the Indian Army Chief has told his forces not to befriend women with ‘names of filmstars’ on social media as they could be honey traps, reported the India Today.

“What makes you think they want to be friends with you? They would not want to be friends with any Tom, Dick and Harry,” Rawat said.

The Indian Army Chief said that the social media cannot be banned in the military but it is to be used in a constructive manner. “It should not compromise on our security as it can be used by our adversary to trap us.”

Last year, the Indian Air Force’s Counter Intelligence Wing had detained a senior Air Force official for allegedly leaking classified information to a woman among others.

The report further mentioned that the officer had got to know the woman on Facebook and there is suspicion that he might have been ‘honey-trapped and compromised’ at some point in the relationship.

Just after a week, a Lieutenant Colonel of the Indian Army was arrested by the intelligence agencies in Madhya Pradesh on charges of leaking classified information and documents of the army to Pakistan.

It was said that the arrested officer might have been ‘honey trapped’ or fallen prey to ‘spear phishing’ by Pakistan’s ISI.
