Afghanistan: Eight found guilty, granted extended prison term over 2018 attack on Kabul Intercontinental Hotel

Eight people have been found guilty of conspiring in the Intercontinental Hotel attack in Kabul, Afghanistan in January last year and have been sentenced to extended periods in prison, TOLOnews reported, quoting a source.

The source, from the Attorney General’s office said the eight people had been found guilty of aiding in the attack and transporting explosives.

Earlier in January, a group of insurgents had stormed the hotel last year in Bagh-e-Bala area in Kabul city on 28 January, leading to the death of 29 people, among which were fourteen foreign nationals.

The seige had lasted for 17 hours and was claimed by the Taliban.

At that time, the report stated that eyewitnesses had claimed that the hotel’s security guards fled the attackers and left guests unprotected. The hotel’s security had been taken over by a private company three weeks prior to the attack.
