16-year old Kashmiri girl missing since February 15 from Jammu

Srinagar: A 16-year old Kashmiri girl has been reported as missing since February 15, the day arson attacks against Kashmiris started after the Pulwama attack in which 49 CRPF personnel were killed.

The girl, identified as Sameera Akhtar went missing from her Jammu residence in Bag-e-Bahu.  The family had filed an FIR on February 16.

The family had tried to look for her. They had lodged an FIR on February 16 in Bag-e-Bahu Police Station. “Police came and really tried to help. They checked on the suspects. But we are unable to find her. We cannot post her picture online due to the suspension of internet services across Jammu,” he says.

The cops told Free Press Kashmir that they are ascertaining weather the girl has been kidnapped or she went away on her own.

“Yes. There is an FIR. The number is 15 and has been lodged on 16-02-2019. The investigation is currently ongoing. We are going to access the call details to see who she was in contact with. Once we find evidence, only then we can ascertain if she has been kidnapped or has gone by her own will. As of now we can’t say anything,” said local police stationed at Bagh-e-Bahu.

The family hails from Khag area of Budgam district and shifts to Jammu for a few months to escape the harsh winter in the valley. They had shifted in December.

“From the past 12 years, we have been coming here. On 15th, there were protests and attacks going on in Gujjar Nagar. We went on the roof top of our rented accommodation to see what was happening. We didn’t realize when Sameera (the missing girl) has left our premises. She was sitting in a room and then took some clothes in the bathroom to wash,” says her Uncle Nazir Ahmad Sheikh who works as a Tower fitter. Her father Ali Mohammad works as a laborer and is a farmer.

“We never fought with anyone here. We are around 50 family members with our mother, my two brothers, our wives and children. She had not spoken to anyone about leaving,” says Nazir.

He adds that the clothes she had taken to the washroom for laundry still lie there. The whole family would travel together, he says adding, “There was no chance of her going far away and that too, without us.”

Sameera has studied up to 6th standard. She does Kadhai work at home.
