Violent clashes break out inside Srinagar’s central jail

Srinagar: Violent protests broke out on Thursday evening inside the high security central jail in Srinagar reportedly over some construction work at a barrack.

Quoting the Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh, who is also DG Prisons, KNS reported that some inmates instigated others to stop the repair and reinforcement works inside a barrack.

“Others (jail inmates) joined and resorted to some violent acts on the jail staff. (They ) also set some place on fire. Fire tenders are on the spot and working,” Singh was quoted as having said in the report.

Meanwhile Press Trust of India reported that riots broke out after rumours started floating that some inmates were being shifted out of the Kashmir valley.

The inmates burnt a temporary shelter and tried to come to the outer cordon of the jail located in the downtown area of the city, it said while quoting.

Senior police officers and additional companies of the CRPF were rushed to the jail to bring the situation under control, the officials added.

Meanwhile, the authorities have imposed restrictions on the movement of people around the jail located in Downtown Srinagar.
