Lok Sabha polls: Kashmir observes complete shutdown on JRL’s call

Srinagar: On the call of the Joint Resistance Leadership, Kashmir is observing a complete shutdown against the first phase of Lok Sabha polling, NIA’s action against Huriyat leaders and their family members.

All shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed due to the strike while attendance in government and private offices was thin. Public transport remained off the roads in most parts of the valley but some private vehicles could be seen plying the roads in the city.

JRL, in a statement on Wednesday had urged people to observe shutdown on every polling day.

Polling is being held for Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency where 13,12 lakh voters are eligible to decide the fate of nine candidates in fray.

Till 9 am in Baramulla 5.80% voting was recorded. In Kupwara, it was 7.98 percent while Bandipora recorded 5.97 percent. Jammu recorded 14.12 percent, while Samba and Rajouri recorded 16.52% and 11.88% percent respectively. Poonch till 9 am saw 12.9 percent polling.
